on Aug 18th, 2009Top 10 PC RPG Games – Best RPG PC Games
There have been many great RPG PC games over the years. Some of them were solo games, but most were part of well-known series. Here is a list of the top 10 best PC RPG games ever.
I used the following rules to create this list:
- The game must be an RPG.
- The game must be available for the PC.
- The game cannot be an MMORPG.
- Only one game per game series is allowed.
10 – Might & Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven – Released in 1998, MM6 is considered one of the best of the Might and Magic series. It is credited with igniting the rebirth of CRPGs at the time of its release. It was also praised for its non-linear, user-friendly premise and an interactive, detailed game world.
9 – Planescape: Torment – Although not a significant commercial success, the game won several awards for Game of the Year and RPG of the Year at the time of release. The game scored high marks with many reviewers for both its character implementation and technical aspects.
8 – Baldur’s Gate – The game received top scores from nearly every gaming publication upon its release. It won both Game of the Year and RPG of the Year in 1998. Baldur’s Gate was the first in a three title series before the story arc was concluded.
7 – Neverwinter Nights – NWN won E3 awards in 2000, 2001, and 2002. It met with very positive reviews and was praised as “having something for everyone”. The game was originally built on a model similar to MMORPGs but allowed the end users to host the servers.
6 – Diablo – One of the most successful titles from a very successful company (Blizzard), Diablo has sold over 2.5 million copies since its release in 1997. The game is considered to be the inventor of the sub-genre called point-and-click RPGs. Many followed after Diablo but few reached the same level of success.
5 – Fable – A huge commercial success, Fable sold over 375,000 copies in North America during its first week. By the end of 2006 it sold more than two million copies. The game was well-received by critics and scored very high with game reviewers.
4 – Final Fantasy VII – The best-selling Final Fantasy game of all time. FFVII has sold over 9.8 million copies as of December 2005. The game has been voted by some as the best game ever, both in North America and Japan.
3 – Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind – One of the best games of 2002 and winner of multiple awards, Morrowind was hailed for its breadth of scope, the richness of its visuals, and the freedom worked into its design. The game was applauded for its rich and detailed environment.
2 – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts, Knights of the Old Republic was considered by many to be the 2003 Game of the Year. It is also considered to be one of the most influential works of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
1 – Fallout 3 – Awarded the Best Role-Playing Game of E3 in 2007, Fallout 3 has won numerous other awards as well. Game reviews for the game have been extremely positive with high praise for its open-ended game lay and flexible character-leveling system.
This is obviously an opinion list. I think all ten of these games are definitely some of the best RPG PC games ever. There were definitely a few others that were very difficult to leave off the list. But overall I think this is a list of ten great RPG games for the PC.
